Glossary of industrial surveying

The key terms around 3D laser scanning, layout validation and set-out – explained clearly and without jargon. So you know what we are talking about.

Point cloud

A millimetre-accurate, three-dimensional image of your hall from millions of individual measurement points. It is created during the 3D laser scan and forms the verified reality of your facility – the shared data basis for all further planning steps.

As-built

The actual built state of a facility – as opposed to "as-planned", the intended target state. In most halls the two differ significantly, because conversions and retrofits rarely end up in the plans. CorVec always works with the as-built state.

Collision checking

The digital check of a planned layout for spatial conflicts – for example when a new machine collides with a pipe, a traffic route or a safety clearance. Done digitally, conflicts surface in the planning phase, not during installation.

Layout validation

The systematic check of a target layout for feasibility: collisions, safety clearances, traffic routes and accessibility. Often several variants are compared to find the best solution before it is implemented.

Robotic total station

A motorised precision instrument (e.g. Trimble Ri) that transfers planned positions into the real hall to the millimetre. It "finds" reference points automatically and marks axes, foundations and machine locations – the basis for collision-free installation.

Set-out

The transfer of an approved, digital layout into the physical hall. Reference points, axes and foundation positions are marked precisely, so installation teams work on unambiguous, verified positions.

3D laser scanning

A contactless measurement method in which a laser scanner (e.g. Trimble X9) captures its surroundings in seconds from millions of points. The result is a point cloud. The scan usually runs during ongoing operations, without interrupting production.

Reference point

A fixed, clearly defined point in the hall that serves as a reference for all measurements and set-outs. Clean reference points ensure that the digital plan and the real hall match exactly.

Audit-proof

Documentation is considered audit-proof if it cannot be altered unnoticed afterwards and remains traceable at all times. At CorVec, every project phase – validation, approval, set-out – is documented in an audit-proof way and is defensible in case of dispute.

Greenfield / Brownfield

"Greenfield" refers to planning on undeveloped land (new build), "brownfield" to planning within existing structures – that is, in a hall already in use. Brownfield projects are more demanding, because the real environment has to be captured exactly. That is exactly what CorVec is built for.
